Welcome. Aether is an event featuring the work and outlooks of artists and musicians. The format for the event is somewhere between a magazine and a radio show.

Each event shall feature performances as well as presentations by invited guests. An informal evening of tones and talks.

We hope you enjoy the atmosphere and the work of the artists we invite.

For the first event, Aether proudly presents...

The 21st Century (Hidde van Schie) – Nocturnal Telurian

The 21st century is the musical brainchild of Hidde van Schie. The first musical incarnation of this project is the stunning album Nocturnal Telurian. A mellow combination of etherial field recordings sitting comfortably with adroit guitar ambience. Hidde shall talk about his new album and be performing a selection of his favourite tracks.

Five Records That Matter: Roland Groenenboom

Our esteemed guest for the first 5RTM is Roland Groenenboom, renowned curator and music enthusiast. His selection is a tour de force set against a back drop of affiliations and friendships. He extended our original invite to select 5 records that matter to a network of friend and associates including Lee Renaldo, Lydia Lunch and Peter Fengler. The result is “a sort of map with links between my choices and the choices of the other contributors, and between those of the other contributors as well. Where do we agree and which are the extremes in the choices of this group of people?” We can't wait!

Machinist (Zeno van de Broek)

Our third guest in tonight’s inaugural event is the architecturally invoking sound of Machinist. Machinist is Zeno van den Broek. An architect by profession he draws inspiration from modern art and the contemporary city. Since 2005 Machinist has created abstract landscapes of sound that are focused on the spatial experience of the auditor. Machinist melts sounds, art and space to create a truly sonic architecture. His performance will feature work from his new album 'Viens Avec Moi Dans Le Vide' Featuring five tracks, this record touches on ambient and drones, besides subtle melodic patterns that are more prominent than with previous Machinist releases.

Together with Mendel Kaelen, Machinist won the 2009 round of X-Vektor, the Dutch contest for finding underground talent. Machinists election as the best act of 2009 was awarded with a performance on the State-X New Forms Festival and the release of The Unfolded Pigeon Response on 10 inch vinyl.

Carlos Fernandez-Pello
(Madrid, Spain) organized an international summit entitled ‘the state of the notion’. This took place on the Vaalserberg in Limburg earlier in August 2009. The landmark, also called Drielandenpunt, is claimed to be the highest point in the Netherlands and at the same time this is the place where the three borders of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands meet. Moreover; during the XIXth century there was a fourth state called Neutral Moresnet that was also in for the dispute of the Vaalserberg. This fact opened a debate on nationality, territory, history and the construction of cultural identity.

Carlos invited the artists Marijke Appelman (NL), Antje Peters (DE) and Dieter Vandoren (BE) to a game in which they had to express their views on several issues regarding cultural belonging, territory and language.

Carlos Fernández-Pello lives and works in Madrid. He studied Fine Arts  in Spain and recently he received an MFA degree for Art Theory  and Practice at UCM (Madrid University Complutense).

STATE OF THE NOTION - Artist Talk & call for collaboration
A project by Carlos Fernández-Pello

Carlos Fernández-Pello will talk about his work and explain about his new project; State of the Notion. For this project he is looking for artists and producers from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium to collaborate with.

Current guest artist at Het Wilde Weten, Carlos Fernández-Pello, was born in 1985 Madrid, Spain, and lives and works in Madrid. He studied Fine Arts and recently he received a MFA degree for Art Theory and Practice at UCM (Madrid University).

State of the Notion is a project that deals with the building up of cultural identity. The project will consist of organising an “international summit” in the surroundings of Mount Vaals (Vaalserberg), in the southern region of Limburg. This landmark, also called Drielandenpunt, was the highest point of the Netherlands and the place where the three borders of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands come together. However, between 1830 and 1919 there was a fourth temporary state named Neutraal Moresnet.

The purpose of the project is to produce the furniture and the rules of a boardgame for three contestants, one from each of the countries that will meet at the Vaalserberg. In this boardgame the players will be required to answer questions and express their views about different aspects of the story of the fourth missing country in their own mother language, enabling reflection on cultural identity.

Carlos Fernández-Pello is looking for artists and producers from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, that are highly interested in the project, that can engage in an international and online working environment, and that are willing to have some fun.

For more info check: http://www.escopica.net/sotn

State of the Notion (Estado de la Noción) is funded by the
Madrid Area of the Arts.

Fufu is about imaginary landscapes that evolve from the combination of intense piano-harmonies and samples,

On the fringe between pop music, jazz and the sound experiments of musique concrète, every song becomes a trial to approximate a deeper layer.

HWW cordially invites you to attend to the presentation of 'Rotterdam Weg', a project by Carme Nogueira. Carme Nogueira is artist in residence in the HWW studio building.

In her most recent work Carme Nogueira (Vigo, Spain) examines the daily resistance to the imposed uses of the city, through specific spatial devices.
During her stay in Rotterdam she developed 'Rotterdam Weg', a project about sites and their memories in the city. The project tries to make visible not only who is questioning the space but also from what point of view it's done, as we know that it's no longer possible to speak in general.

The exhibition

RAiR #1 brings together the work of twenty-one visual artists who were artists in residence in Rotterdam between 2003 and 2009.

Works by:

Gema Alba (ES)
Zigor Barayazarra (ES)
Erin Marie Dunn (US)
Annegret Eisele (D)
Lasse Schmidt Hansen (DK)
Karin Hueber (CH)
Annette Kisling (D)
Giuseppe Licari (IT)
Friederike Mainka (D)
Carme Nogueira (ES)
Daniele Pario Perra (IT)
Ben Pointeker (AT)
Abner Preis (US)
Saskia Schüler (D)
Andrew Sroka (US)
Edward Clydesdale Thomson (UK)
Nicola Unger (D)
Hanneke van Velzen (NL)
Martijn in ’t Veld (NL)
Annu Wilenius (FI)
Kenji Yamada (JP)

The exhibition’s theme is how the visiting artist relates to the new environment. The exhibited artists’ working practices show two approaches. Some artists display an introvert approach, having used their residency as an opportunity to absorb themselves in their work in the studio. Others show a more extrovert approach, having sought interaction with their surroundings and produced work that responds to the social and cultural context

The exhibition demonstrates the high quality of the work made by these artists and shows that Rotterdam’s fifteen guest studios form an indispensable link between the Dutch and international art worlds.
